BPA opens stall in Sha Tin Chinese New Year Fair

The stall of the Business and Professionals Alliance for Hong Kong (BPA) in the Sha Tin Chinese New Year Fair was officially opened today (February 5) by a team of BPA leaders in the presence of senior government officials.

Officiating at the opening ceremony were BPA members in the Legislative Council Mr Andrew Leung, Mr Jeffrey Lam, Dr Lo Wai-kwok, Dr Priscilla Leung, together with guests of honour Mr Raymond Tam, Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, and Ms Florence Hui, Deputy Secretary for Home Affairs.

The stall exuded a joyful festive atmosphere. Mr Tam and the BPA team joined the mentally disabled in the production of Chinese New Year handicraft, whereas Ms Hui prepared lucky messages in traditional Chinese calligraphy for free distribution to the public.

Chairman Mr Andrew Leung said the stall in Sha Tin underscored BPA’s determination to reach out for the public and share fun with the local community. “Our alliance has come into being for more than three months now. To raise our public profile, we endeavour to strengthen our community work and cover all livelihood issues. We would like to take this opportunity to wish Hong Kong people a happy and healthy Chinese New Year,” he added.

“Sha Tin is a popular neighbourhood for middle-class families. Yet it has also seen the problem of an ageing population in certain housing estates. The BPA will provide a wide range of services to the local community accordingly. We will try hard to accumulate experience and enhance our service standard,” Vice Chairman Mr Jeffrey Lam said.

Noting that the Sha Tin stall was a project of collaboration with the disabled, Mr Lam said that it was built on the success of similar community events earlier, including the sale of food with big discounts and free distribution of warm clothes to the elderly.

The project marked a close partnership between the able-bodied and the disabled. With the BPA helping with community liaison and providing business advice, the dynamic team takes up the day-to-day operation of the stall, ranging from stocking, marketing to sale.

For Dr Lo Wai-kwok, Vice Chairman of the Alliance, the Sha Tin project was particularly meaningful, as it brought back the fond memories when he was a member of the Sha Tin District Council. On behalf of the Alliance, he extended gratitude to the honourable guests, volunteers and participants for their help and support to the project.

BPA website keeps the public posted

A group of the Business and Professionals Alliance for Hong Kong (BPA) members has staged a publicity blitz to mark the launch of the Alliance’s website today (January 30).

Dressed in their uniform T-shirt with the QR Code, BPA Legislative Council members Mr Andrew Leung, Mr Lau Wong-fat, Mr Jeffrey Lam, Mr Abraham Razack, Mr Christopher Cheung, Dr Lo Wai-kwok and Dr Priscilla Leung showed up together in the Legislative Council Chamber to promote the new website at www.bpahk.org.

Using smart phones to browse at the legislators’ QR Code will result in automatic connection with the “Useful Tips” section of the BPA website.

Chairman Mr Andrew Leung said the Alliance strived to keep pace with the society and modern innovation. “Given the popularity of smart phones and the convenience of QR Code, it’s high time we made it easier for the public to approach us through the new media,” he said.

The Alliance is prepared to use different kinds of the new media to promote public awareness of its latest development. “We will move beyond the traditional boundary of a business political group and reach out for the general public. Apart from this website, we will also use the social networking website Facebook and new media like YouTube to publicise our ideas and political platform,” Mr Leung said.

The latest postings on the “Useful Tips” page are all practical advice for our daily life. Mr Andrew Leung shows how we can change to new electrical appliances at a bargain. Mr Jeffrey Lam shares ideas on dressing up in suits. Mr Christopher Cheung dispenses with investment ideas for this new year. On the hot topic of property ownership, Mr Abraham Razack gives advice on the purchase of second-hand flats; Dr Lo Wai-kwok provides easy-to-follow guidance on flat inspection. As far as new year recreation is concerned, Mr Lau Wong-fat names three good travel destinations in Tuen Mun, whereas Dr Priscilla Leung shows the attraction of various promenades of Hong Kong. Educational and entertaining, the section is really a mini encyclopedia on city life which puts together the collective wisdom of the BPA legislators.

The website contains a wealth of BPA information. Apart from the latest news, it also allows access to the policy research and reports, speeches and LegCo Questions  of BPA legislators as well as their articles on different issues. For details, please visit www.bpahk.org.

Inauguration Ceremony of the Business and Professionals Alliance for Hong Kong

The Inauguration Ceremony of the Business and Professionals Alliance for Hong Kong (BPA) was held today (18 Dec) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive, the Honorable Mr. Leung Chun-ying, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government, the Honorable Mr. Lin Wu and over one hundred guests attended the event to celebrate the birth of the Alliance.

Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen, chairman of the Alliance, noted in the ceremony, “Ever since Hong Kong reverted to the motherland 15 years ago, the interests of the city have been well cared for and protected by the Central Government. Meanwhile, we are faced with unstoppable technological advancements, the deepening of the US-European economic crisis, the worsening of the international political and economic situations and a globalised economy. Being bombarded by these changes and challenges, Hong Kong’s ability to adapt and innovate is constantly tested. The cacophony of populist rhetoric has smothered the voice of reason.”

“The establishment of the Hong Kong Business and Professionals Alliance is precisely timed to tackle the challenges of this period. A group of friends and I deeply believe that the economy is at the core of politics and people’s livelihood is the foundation of democracy in any society. No matter how fierce and intense a conflict is, ultimately we still need to reach a consensus.

Like everyone else, the Hong Kong Business and Professionals Alliance loves Hong Kong. Our members embrace and cherish its core values. We have our eyes on not only today or tomorrow but also the future that will affect our children and future generations. We are concerned about the Hong Kong of the next 10, 20 years and beyond.” Mr. Leung said.

Council chairman of the Alliance Dr. Peter Lam also shared his thoughts with the guests in the ceremony. “Hong Kong is my home. Hong Kong belongs to the seven million people here. Managing and nourishing our homeland is the honorable duty and right of every citizen. Upholding the “One country” principle and respecting the differences between the “Two systems” are our guidelines in constructing a better Hong Kong.”

The advisory board of the Alliance gathered together a number of celebrities from the business and professional sectors to work together for Hong Kong’s future development. Practical and specific recommendations on various social issues will be addressed and participation and influence in policy formulation will also be strengthened.

Looking ahead, the Alliance will take the initiative to invite like-minded friends to join; conduct policy research to support the work of councilors at all levels. In addition, the Alliance will expand its service scope to outreach into the community to strive for the support of the general public. With a common will and faith, the Alliance will not step back from contradictions and difficulties, but move towards a share goal to create a new political pattern and an ideal social environment for Hong Kong.

The logo of the Alliance reflects precisely this belief. The square outline of the logo symbolizes our society, whilst the space in white signifies the power of the Business and Professionals Alliance for Hong Kong. By consolidating the efforts from various sectors, with vigor and power, the alliance will mobilize the development of our society.

The Alliance was established in October this year. Members include seven LegCo members (Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen, Jeffrey Lam Kin-fung, Lau Wong-fat, Abraham Shek Lai-him, Chris Cheung Wah-fung, Lo Wai-kwok and Priscilla Leung Mei-fun), numerous district councilors and elites from the professional and business sector, who have long been involved in community work with a common goal. With a motto of “Business drives economy; Professionalism improves livelihood”, BPA wishes to work for the well being of Hong Kong people and create a solid foundation for our next generation.
