BPA’s Response to the 2014 Policy Address

In his concluding remark for of the Policy Address, the Chief Executive stressed that it was “imperative to pursue people’s livelihood and the economy in tandem”. This is a belief that is, to a large extent, shared by the BPA. It is however disappointing to note that the reference to economic development is not sufficiently reflected in the contents of the Policy Address, namely, the strategies for economic development are fragmented and piecemeal while the needs of the middle class and SMEs, who are the major contributors to Hong Kong’s economy, have been overlooked.

BPA First Anniversary Dinner

BPA members and the officiating guests share a toast to the BPA’s bright future.

The Business and Professionals Alliance for Hong Kong (BPA) held its First Anniversary Dinner today (17 December). Mr John Tsang, Acting Chief Executive, and Mr Shen Chong, Director General of the Coordination Department, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, attended as the officiating guests.

Question – Repair works of tenement building at Kai Ming Street (Priscilla Leung)

It is learnt that in October 2009, the Buildings Department (BD) issued repair orders to the owners of a tenement building at 51 Kai Ming Street, To Kwa Wan, requiring them to repair the external walls, common areas and pipes of the building. In early 2010, BD further found that there were problems with the cantilevered slab balconies of the building and, therefore, issued statutory orders to the owners requiring them to arrange for a detailed investigation.

Question – Fire safety measures of old buildings (Priscilla Leung)

Under the Fire Safety (Building) Ordinance (Cap. 572), the authorities may issue Fire Safety Directions (Directions) to require the owners or occupiers of composite and domestic buildings to improve, by a specified date, the fire service installations (including the installation of automatic sprinkler systems) and fire safety construction (including the provision of fire resisting construction) for the parts of their properties intended for non-domestic purposes.
