BPA’s Response to the 2014 Policy Address

In his concluding remark for of the Policy Address, the Chief Executive stressed that it was “imperative to pursue people’s livelihood and the economy in tandem”. This is a belief that is, to a large extent, shared by the BPA. It is however disappointing to note that the reference to economic development is not sufficiently reflected in the contents of the Policy Address, namely, the strategies for economic development are fragmented and piecemeal while the needs of the middle class and SMEs, who are the major contributors to Hong Kong’s economy, have been overlooked.

Speech – Promoting the economic development of Lok Ma Chau and Lantau Island (Jeffrey Lam)

President, Hong Kong is a densely populated place with a large number of vehicles, and large shopping areas in districts such as Causeway Bay and Tsim Sha Tsui are particularly crowded during weekends and holidays. As there are few shopping areas over the territory, local people and visitors flock to these places for shopping.

BPA First Anniversary Dinner

The Business and Professionals Alliance for Hong Kong (BPA) held its First Anniversary Dinner today (17 December). Some members of the business sector have relayed to me that the shortage of international school places in the Hong Kong, in particular primary school places on Hong Kong Island and in Kowloon, has deterred quite a number of talents interested in developing their career in Hong Kong from doing so as they are worried of being unable to find suitable schools in Hong Kong for their children. We’ve got grave manpower shortage, the security industry tells BPA

At a meeting with representatives of the Business and Professionals Alliance for Hong Kong (BPA) today (September 10), the security industry reflected that it had problems of hiring staff. In response, Chairman Mr Andrew Leung proposed that more training and promotion opportunities should be offered to attract young people to the industry.

Question – Occupy Central movement (Jeffrey Lam)

It has been reported that some scholars have initiated the Occupy Central movement, one of the actions of which is to call for more than 10 000 people to block the roads in Central next year (the road occupation action), with the intent to force the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and the Central Government to accept the proposal for universal suffrage recognised by these people.
