Press Release on a BPA Delegation to Guangdong

The Business and Professionals Alliance for Hong Kong (BPA) today (27 January) organised a delegation to Guangdong. The objectives of the visit were to exchange views on issues of common interests through meetings with various Guangdong officials, and to deepen cross-border cooperation for the mutual benefit of the SAR and the Province. Mr Peter Lam, head of the delegation and BPA Council Chairman, welcomed joint efforts by Guangdong and Hong Kong to promote economic development and pointed out that “economic integration”, “fostering development” and “promoting stability” were the current priorities for Hong Kong, as well as the BPA.

Opening of the BPA Lunar New Year Fair Stall and Award Presentation Ceremony

BPA Legislative Councilors and officiating guests carried the winning designs while sending their best wishes to the community.

The Business and Professionals Alliance for Hong Kong (BPA) today (26 January) opened its stall at the Lunar New Year Fair in Victoria Park. The opening ceremony was presided over by BPA Legislative Councilors and government officials. They also presented awards to winners of a Creative Fair Product Design Competition that had been organised earlier.

BPA’s Response to the 2014 Policy Address

In his concluding remark for of the Policy Address, the Chief Executive stressed that it was “imperative to pursue people’s livelihood and the economy in tandem”. This is a belief that is, to a large extent, shared by the BPA. It is however disappointing to note that the reference to economic development is not sufficiently reflected in the contents of the Policy Address, namely, the strategies for economic development are fragmented and piecemeal while the needs of the middle class and SMEs, who are the major contributors to Hong Kong’s economy, have been overlooked.

Question – Road safety involving crane lorries (Lo Wai-Kwok)

It has been reported that on September 14 of last year, the crane of a crane lorry in motion hit a directional sign which was six metres above the ground, paralyzing the traffic for more than two hours, and less than a month later, the crane of another crane lorry running on the road snapped two overhead cables of the Light Rail System, causing disruption of the Light Rail service for several hours. Speech – Promoting the economic development of Lok Ma Chau and Lantau Island (Lo Wai-kwok)

Deputy President, first of all I would like to thank Mr WONG Ting-kwong for proposing the motion on “Promoting the economic development of Lok Ma Chau (LMC) and Lantau Island” today. The original motion urges the Government to expeditiously study the setting up of a business and shopping centre in LMC, not only to capitalize on the geographical advantages and flow of people at the border, but also help to alleviate the pressure of popular shopping spots in Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories, which are already crowded to capacity.
